Thanksgiving Fun

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I am on the road today.  So no time for a full post.  How about some reader contributed content.  Write your best Thanksgiving haiku in the comments.  We'll vote on our favorites and the winner gets a lame prize from me.  (The prize will probably be a book I picked up somewhere along the way.) Remember, a haiku is 3 lines.  5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second, then 5 again.

Here are a few I wrote:

Yesterday, all day Seven hundred miles I drove There best be some ham

My Granny Cooks the Turkey so deliciously Pass the gravy Please

Three dollar Blu-ray? I’m not shopping tomorrow Pick one up for me

Best Web Junk (November 20)

Earlier this year I spent a  couple of days as a mission project trimming hedges that looked like this. (on the left)  I wish I had thought of this system I really want to go to this.  Seriously, I very much want to go.  But it's not coming anywhere close to me.  I only heard about it this week and apparently I missed it in Charlotte.  If I could figure out how to be gone for Christmas that early, I'd try to see it in Nashville on the 13th.

Anybody want a very expensive hamburger?

I would like this shirt from shirt.woot.  How ling to do you think I can wait to order it?

I have seen this like 20 times this week, but maybe you haven't.  Read the reviews for this product

Here is a helpful poster

NaNoWriMo Project take 2

Remember this? That story did not go at all the way I expected it to.  I certainly didn't see Michael Strahan showing up.  It was kinda fun

Well it's November again, NaNoWriMo, so let's take another crack at writing a collaborative story.  Again this year I'll make a tab at the top with a link to the story.  You add your contribution in the comments and I'll move it up to the body of the story.

The one thing we need to make it better is your contribution.

Here are the rules.  same rules as last year:

  1. No one can write two consecutive portions
  2. Portions may not be longer than 400 words
  3. Be aware of continuity.  Please read the story and relate your section to the rest.  We don’t want this to turn out like Snoopy’s novel.   Not too many meanwhiles etc.
  4. No quick endings.  Please don’t have aliens destroy the world, or some sort of catastrophy to end the story short
  5. Please don’t negate the contributions of others, (e.g. Then he woke up…it was all a dream)
  6. Careful of content/language.  Try to write your portions without swears or non PG-13 content.
  7. I reserve the right to edit your portion for spelling grammar and format.
  8. Have fun

Finally – Try this. even if you don’t think this is your thing or if you aren’t creative, write one sentence.  Give it a shot.  I think this might be fun.

What you People Come Here For (October Edition)

Each month I collect the interesting searches that bring people to my blog and share them with you unedited.  They are simply cut-and-pasted exactly as they appeared.  Whatever you see in parenthesis is my commentary.  This month it seems like 40% of searches  included the word tattoo.  But only a few were funny.  Really it was a pretty boring month of searches overall

  • fence tattoos (really? a tattoo of a fence?)
  • dinosaur conversation
  • "is america being punk'd" obama (No idea why this would bring anyone to my blog)
  • tattoo speaker
  • who is john galt tattoo (I have no idea)

I guarantee nobody would say this at Christmas This is hilarious (be warned it has a couple of swears)

I think Ryan should go with this look

You know how people are always seeing faces in random stuff?  This one I totally see

Also in seeing pictures where they may or may not exist is this awesomeness

This lop-sided guy is really freaky looking

Entertainment Weekly asked people to post pictures of their best pop culture inspired Halloween costumes.  Some of these are very enjoyable (The 4 y.o. Lando Calrissian is by far my favorite)

This site is fun but this is one of the many things I think is just here so people can get on the site This was on Digg, so you've probably seen it.  But these are awesome Mario wallpapers

I officially think this is the best website I have seen in recent memory.  Express your road rage safely (and check yourself to see who you've angered)

This video is more than a little bit impressive

Even though it's not from this week, this is the funniest lolcat I've seen in a while The Star Wars Soundboard ver. 2

Did you ever wonder what the worst song in the world would sound like?  In my opinion it's "I Will Always Love You" the Whitney Houston version, but apparently the scientific answer can be found here.

I posted this on Facebook earlier this week and since then I've seen at least 10 others post it, but it definitely is the best thing I've seen this week.  I present All the Single Babies.  And you know it is one of the best videos of all time

This is by far the scariest story of the week. These pictures are beautiful and impressive

epic fail pictures I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at this.  The hypothesis section is just about the funniest thing ever.  From Fail Blog

Interestingly, most of this stuff has come true.  these commercials are from 1993.

This Blog's Presidential Address: This One's For the Children

I was originally planning to post about how we seem to want to fight over everything in this country.  The President* wants to make a speech to schoolchildren and 2 weeks before anyone knows what He is going to say, there is national uproar. Well, I've seen the speech now.  Here's what it says, "Work hard, life is not fair and can be hard, don't drop out."  That's pretty controversial stuff, and how dare our president (a known politician) try to indoctrinate our children in such a way.

In light of this stupid controversy, here is my very tongue-in-cheek rebuttal to President Obama's speech:

Kids, school is boring.  You should never be expected to do anything you don't want to do.  How dare your teachers expect you do do things like reports, math, grammar and spelling.  And your parents, they are just trying to keep you from having fun.

U no, u can rlly just talk how you want to.

Chances are, you won't have to pay any bills when you grow up.  And if you do, you probably won't need math.  Checkbooks practically balance themselves these days.  And learning whether to use their, there, or they're only matters in writing.  Nobody can tell you are illiterate in a text message or on the phone.

One day you'll finish school, or just quit if you want to.  Then you'll probably get married and have children.  You still shouldn't have to do anything you don't want to do.  I mean your kids will probably want to eat, but your parents took care of you, they can take care of your kids too.

And your boss, all he will want is to keep you from having fun.  If your job involves doing stuff you don't want to do, just quit.  There's more jobs.

The important thing to understand is that life is totally fair.  When things seem unfair, you should complain.  Quit whenever things get difficult.  There will always be somebody to take care of you.  (Unless that seems unfair to them :-)

In all seriousness, I would be happy for my hypothetical children to hear this speech.  Will it make any difference to a kid about to drop out of school?  Probably not, but it definitely cannot hurt.

WBAGNFFAFFT II

You may remember that last August I posted a list of what I thought were clever fantasy football team names.  If not you can see it here.  I have had several hits in the last week about naming a Fantasy football team so I thought I'd again share my list.    So what I’ve done for you is to collect all of the clean & funny, WBAGNFARB’s* from Dave Barry’s blog over the last year.  This list is not comprehensive or original.  It's merely a collection from that blog.

  • Lovelorn Musk Ox
  • Mid-afternoon Confrontation
  • The Mushers
  • Plowing Down the Rifleman
  • Snakes in a spigot
  • Reptiles of concern
  • Solar-Powered Sea Slug and the Stolen Plant Genes
  • Fugitive Emu
  • Freakishly Powerful Toilet
  • Scorpion Soup
  • Pickled Chameleon
  • Vengeful Weasel
  • Delinquent Cod
  • Trouser Thief and the Violent Garment Swap

I really like this article about the structure of the NAMB.  Though I think he could have moderated his tone a bit. For those of us of a certain age.  This video rules

First up is this news story about a girl suing her college's job placement office I think this is the key paragraph:

She suggested that Monroe's Office of Career Advancement shows preferential treatment to students with excellent grades. "They favor more toward students that got a 4.0. They help them more out with the job placement

Then there is this sad story (with an impressive piccture) about a grass carp killed by raw nuts.  In this article I learned that carp live into their 30s (unless they eat too many nuts).

This LOLcat cracked me up

A couple of good videos

First up is this video that all youth ministers should enjoy.  Some of it is so accurate and hilarious.  I very much enjoyed this video [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKI63tWSFyg]

Secondly, this video from this morning's minister's meeting at my association. Be sure and watch the songs at the beginning.  The guy on guitar is amazing.  He pretty much tears the guitar up.  The audio is pretty bad, but I think you'll get the idea.
