Best Web Junk (April 30)

This week in best web junk all you get is you get two very different videos. First - A really neat effect caused by a frame rate in sync with a helicopter blade.  [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8_6NRXfRVE]

And second - An acappella group singing Lady Gaga.  It is quite entertaining.

What You People Come Here For (Feb-Mar Edition)

Usually once a month I like to take a look at all the interesting searches that brought people to my site.  I put them here just as they appeared I copy and paste them.  Whatever you see in parentheses is my commentary.

  • tattoos gcr (This one is here because of the image it conjures up.  I can totally see Dr. Akin rocking his Great Commission Resurgence tattoo)
  • tattoos za raka
  • funny junk cat
  • dizziness after loud dog bark  (I feel sorry for this person)
  • funny buying
  • the church of the platypus (I think platypoda go to Greek-Orthoxox churches usually)

What I will not miss about NC

I moved to North Carolina just over 7 years ago.  And later this week I will be moving away.  So I thought I would write a couple of posts about North Carolina.  Tomorrow I will write about the things I will miss when I leave, but today’s topic is what I will not miss about living in NC.

  • The distance from my family –  It is about 700 miles from here to my hometown, I only see my family about 3 times a year
  • The U.S. Army trying to shake my house apart – I have lived about a mile from Ft. Bragg for the last 5 years.  In that time I have grown accustomed to my house shaking, windows rattling, and the sort of jumpiness that comes with that.  However, that doesn’t mean I like it.  And my dog hates it.  He just roams around the house barking at some unknown enemy.  This is one thing I will not miss in the slightest.
  • Bar-b-q with no smoke in it – What people call bar-b-q around here is good enough for what it is.  It just isn’t bar-b-q and I won’t miss it in the slightest.
  • The traffic – All I will say here is good riddance to the traffic in Fayetteville.  I will not miss Reilly Rd.  I will not have to make Yadkin Rd., Skibo Rd., or The longest light in the world on Morganton a normal part of my day.  And for that I am glad.
  • The world turning yellow every spring – I guess this is not strictly a North Carolina problem, but it is a problem all over the Deep South where pine trees are the majority.  In late March and early April everything turns yellow.  I don’t mean has a sort of yellow sheen to it, but the wind blowing through the trees looks like yellow smoke.  Cars turn yellow, the ground turns yellow.  The pollen forms a light dust on the ground that is actually slippery.  The windward side of the lake becomes coated in yellow pollen and after every cast so does your bait.  If you have never seen it, I don’t believe I can do it justice with words.
  • Fire Ants – Again, I know this is not just a problem in the Sandhills of NC, but fire ants were unknown to me before I moved here.  For more on my feelings about fire ants, read this.
  • People referring to chicken & dumplings as “pastries” – Nothing about that makes any sense to me on any level. Good riddance to that quirk of dialect.
  • The difficulty in watching UK games – I am an SEC fan, stuck for the last 7 years in the heart of ACC country.  Kentucky is regularly preempted in favor of an ACC game.  I understand why, but I hate it.  That is one more thing I will not miss.

Best Web Junk (March 19)

UFOs over Paris? The only thing on TIWYF I have ever wanted to attempt to make

I think more businesses should have this requirement.

Once again researchers learn something in a study that the Bible already told us

If you read my post on Wednesday you know I am unhappy with the greed of Delta Airlines.  Well, apparently I am not he only one with an airline horror story

In light of that airline rant earlier this week I'll post the third in the series of United Breaks Guitars videos.  I posted the previous two here.

This passive aggressive note is the best thing I've seen in a long time Have 10 minutes and want to play a fun flash game - Then you are welcome 1-button Bob (My best is 388 I'm sure I could trim off at least 30 clicks)

Amen

I can't imagine you made it through the week on the interwebs without seeing this vid, but it is awesome.  Also it must be hard to play guitar with only 4 fingers

I love fishing, but if I ever reeled in something that looks like this I'd probably freak out.  (Probably not gonna happen though since it's nearly extinct) This movie will probably be better than Transformers 2

This cannot be real. But if it is, it's pretty impressive

<rant>With all the talk about Avatar lately I've been wondering why movies count the amount of money they take in rather than actual ticket sales like every other form of entertainment.  I mean seriously, records & books count units sold.  TV counts ratings, not ad money taken in.  Why do movies report money.  Of course movies set records for box-office reciepts all the time.  Movie prices inflate faster than any product I can think of.  </rant>

Finally, somebody listed top movies by ticket sales

This is so brilliant and it is by far the best video I've seen this week.   It only has one, but be warned -

it has a swear[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtGSXMuWMR4]

The Final Season of Lost is Coming

It's less than a week away

And I have been rewatching the series since Christmas.  I'm only about halfway thorugh season 3 right now bu watching it again reminds me of just what a great show it is.

Like everyone else I have a list of questions that I hope is answered by the final season.  I know that not every single thing I wonder about will be answered, but here are the 10 questions that I feel are most important.

Let me phrase them in the form of   What’s the deal with…

  1. Jacob/Man in Black
  2. The Island (I know this one is pretty vague)
  3. The numbers
  4. Walt and/or Vincent (the ability to make stuff happen)
  5. Richard Alpert – why doesn’t that dude age?
  6. Christian Shepherd
  7. The smoke monster
  8. Why children can’t be born on the island
  9. That giant statue
  10. Everybody being connected. Did the island choose them or what’s the deal with that?

So those are my questions.  What did I leave out?

Finally, here's a promo to get you fired up.

I am ashamed to say I missed one of these A headline that headline writers dream about

I like fishing, but I've never caught anything that can be measured in Miley Cyruses (This story would be better if it was less Brittish.  Lots of these celebrities are unfamiliar to me)

Obvious headlines - "Females more likely to test for Women's diseases"

These are awesome - Snakes on a Plane for the Atari 2600

I do not watch American Idol, but it continues to produce stars.  Like this 62 year old Hip-Hop pioneer

This story is just so amazingly terrible. Also, I believe it could easily happen in the US The 00 decade in logos and icons.  This thing is pretty neat

Of course everyone has seen this video this week

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2XymdmLQhE] Here's an interview with the lady who is now famous for it.

Best Web Junk (Jan 1)

I have been disconnected from the web for most of this week so this is actually something I saw on the web way back on Dec 17 2009. This video enhances the stupidest common thing on all the procedural shows.  You can't make an image where there is nothing.  At least on Flash Forward after 3 weeks, they admitted that they couldn't improve a security video image very much.

A Christmas Eve Acro

I know there's actually nobody visiting this blog today.  But if you are here you might as well play along.  Just make an acrostic, preferably Christmas themed,  from the provided letters and put it in the comments.  We’ll chose our winner somehow. B I R T H

Here are my entries ---

Our Christmas Party Project

My Church had our youth Christmas party Saturday night.  I knew going in that I was going to have a pretty small group there so my regular Christmas-themed games wouldn't be successful. Then I saw this video on Richard Wiseman's blog last week

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_f3SkxTWxc]

The post suggested these as party science stunts to try.  I decided that trying to recreate the video shot by shot would be a fun project.  So it took us about an hour and a half but it was a fun project for my small group of students.  I tried to edit our video to match the original.  I used music supplied by youtube because I was afraid the Christmas music I used originally was not legal.  Also our video doesn't have the narration because I don't have the cool accent.  So you'll need to watch the original to get what the experiments are.

Without further ado I present to you the video from the LPBC youth Christmas party:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-AgMbE7sSE]

Pretty good, huh?

I even had time left to tell Mitch's Christmas story like I have every Christmas since I've been in ministry.

Best Web Junk (December 11)

Google will send a free Christmas postcard to anyone  you want You just cannot let this sort of behavior go unchecked in our schools or before you know it all kids will want to enjoy themselves

This unbelievably creepy phenomenon probably says something about our society, but all I can think is - That's just wrong

Sharks with People Teeth

While fishing I've seen herons, fish, and snakes.  I've seen Herons eating fish, snakes eating frogs, and birds eating snakes.  But I've never seen this

I made a 100 on this Mythbusters quiz

By far the best video I saw this week But I can't get it to post to wordpress

I didn't understand 20 words in this 2 minute commercial.  But it has some really neat animation
